Compose and Play

20 May 2020 10:00

Today we finally introduce you to a special feature where you can become the creator of your own music. Learn how to compose, play and share your music scores and bring out the Clara Schumann, Claude Debussy, or Isaac Albéniz in you!

How to Compose

Go to the Music Album. It should be easy to spot as it should have an icon saying "NEW" next to it.

  • Old menu: ESC > Music Album

  • New menu: ESC > Community > Music Album

Click on the Music Album icon to bring up a Compose/Score window as below.

There are 4 buttons to choose from.

1. Compose: Compose your own music.

2. Album: You can listen to or download music created by your fellow adventurers.

3. Sound Settings: Set up your sound settings before composing music.

4. Close: Close the Compose/Score window.

Press the "Compose" button to bring up a window where you can actually create your own notes as below.

You can find various functions. Let's take a look one by one.

1. BPM: Beats per minute. You can set the speed of your composition. The fastest is 180, and lowering the BPM will slow down your music.

2. Meter: Set the time signature to specify how many beats are in a bar.

3. Value: You can configure the notes here. Set 1/4 for quarter notes, 1/8 for eighth notes and 1/16 for sixteenth notes.

4. Velocity: You can set the velocity of your composition, which controls how loud it will be. Maximum velocity is 127, which you can change per note by clicking LMB on the notes individually. After setting the default velocity, change the velocity for each note according to add dynamics to the music.

5. Instrument: Guitar, flute, and hand drum are three instruments you can choose from. You can compose for all of them in the same composition, which means that if you play the song in a party, you can play as an ensemble.

6. Edit Mode and Select Mode: In Edit Mode, you can add notes. In Select Mode, you can edit the notes you've already added onto the score. You can even use your mouse to drag over and select several notes to edit them all at once in Select Mode.

7. Reset: You can reset your entire score and delete everything you've worked on so far.

8. Save: You can save your composition.

The red line shown above represents a bar in the score. You can vary the length of each note in a bar, as well as change the BPM and meter of the entire piece, to give your music dimension.

How to share music

You can share your composition by opening up the Compose/Score window again, then pressing the cogwheel icon under Etc. to select "Share."

Make sure to have the "Register Music" option on for each composition you would like to share with other adventurers. They can even download the score if you have "Allow Download" on. If you have "Register Music" off, your compositions will only appear in "My Folder" of your Music Album.

Explore the Music Album to tune into creative and beautiful scores composed by your fellow adventurers.

Let's play!

Though any character can compose, only a Shai character can play the composed songs.

As a Shai, select a song from your list in the Music Album and press the play button to play the song as your character. Before you play the song, you have to choose which instrument you are going to play from all the instruments that the song was written for.

Complete certain daily quests and Music Advancement quests with a Shai character who has discovered her Talent to gain EXP for improving her grade. The higher the Shai's grade is, the more bars and notes she can play. You can select multiple notes then press "Delete" to delete them all at once.

Ensemble playing is also available with the Compose and Play feature, if you are in a party. Follow the steps below to play with your fellow adventurers.

  1. If you want to play together you must form a party (up to four members can join in a party for an ensemble play). If the party has more than four members, requests to join an ensemble cannot be sent.

  2. From the Play Settings window, you as the party leader can first select the music score you want to play, then select Ensemble.

  3. Press the "Send Confirmation" button to ask your party members to join your ensemble, which then they can either accept or decline the request. Each party member can also choose which instrument to play.

  4. Once your party is ready to play the music score together, you as the party leader can press the "Play" button on the bottom to start.

Not every party member has to be in a "Ready!" status for the party leader to start the ensemble play. As long as no one is in "Standby" mode, the music score can be played.

Make sure all party members have downloaded the music score that the party leader selected in order to play the same music altogether. It is possible to play different scores of music in an ensemble, but that would just make bad harmony right? If more than one party member selects the same instrument to play in an ensemble, the sound of that instrument will be more prominent, of which you can take advantage. So, play together and have fun!

For any tips and discussion on the Compose and Play feature, don't forget to check out the "Garnier Troupe" Chat Group that has been added with this latest update.

Finally, we would like to announce that you can create your own music score to enter our very first music creation contest, "Shai's Got Talent".
